Sakthan, besides being a strong ruler was a parton of the arts too and he decided to add to the beauty of Thrissur which had salubrious climate and excellent topography. He cleared the dense forest around the Vadakkunnathan Temple occupying the centre of the town and made a beautiful and extensive maidan, now called the Thekkinkad Maidan.
He also created the infrastructure to make Thrissur the hub of commercial activity. Thrissur gets into the festivelmood right from mid-november till mid-may. For a tourist visiting the destinations, it is six long months of continuous extravaganza, where one can participate.
